Classes at Derby Academy

Classes for Children

Cecchetti Ballet Examinations - Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing

Exams are a regular and successful part of Academy life. We pride ourselves on thirty years of 100% pass rates in both dance and drama. Whilst there is no obligation to take examinations, they're considered a useful tool in the development of a pupil's technique and confidence. The timetable allows pupils to take single or multiple classes.

Modern Theatre Dance / Jazz

Modern theatre dance offers adults and children a strong and structured method of theatrical dance training. Technique is important in all dance forms and the modern syllabus encourages everyone, especially children, to explore and enjoy various styles of music and dance.

Tap

Tap classes are for all ages and abilities with the emphasis being on fun with the experience both British and American tap techniques.

Drama

Drama work, based on the LAMDA syllabus, includes voice and movement development, acting, speaking of verse and prose, improvisation, mime and public speaking. Most of the work is script-based and covers a wide range of styles and periods.

LAMDA Musical Theatre Examination

This new qualification offers students acting, singing and characterisation from familiar musicals working individually and in small groups.

Full time performers course and teacher training

Performers' Course

A three-year full-time course designed to prepare students (16+) for entry into the dance and theatre profession. Whether opting for classical ballet or musical theatre, the course options provide an intense programme of study to help students fulfil their potential.

Each year has a classical basis with additional classes taken in jazz, modern dance, tap, contemporary, drama and singing. Students are required to attend anatomy and dance history classes. In readiness for employment, it is of the utmost importance for students to graduate with a full understanding of themselves and the performing arts.

Teacher Training

Derby Academy is a recognised teacher-training centre and is also an examination centre for ISTD and LAMDA examinations.

The new government recognised teacher training qualifications, Foundation in Dance Instruction (FDI), Certificate in Dance Education (CDE) and the Enrico Cecchetti Diploma, have been added to the curriculum for those who wish to take them.

Entry to the Performers Course and teacher training is by interview only. If a candidate's previous ballet experience comes from outside the Cecchetti method some additional study may be required and this can be discussed at the interview stage. For more information please speak to a member of staff or request a prospectus and interview.
